Description
Using Jing or Camtasia students were required to create a screencast to be shared with their class and used as part of the Blackboard Classroom Design project. A screencast is very similar to a screenshot, in that it shows the viewer exactly what was on the screen at the time of the shot. However, in screencasting, one is able to share their entire desktop or a part (depending on their preference) and share that with another user. Jing and Camtasia are free services if the user chooses the basic option. In their screencast, the students were required to: ¨ Display knowledge of the material and include a purpose or objective of the screencast ¨ Present the information in ask skillful way ¨ Use excellent communication skills ¨ Cite and list resources ¨ Make their work easily accessible ¨ Post their finalized product to the class PBWiki
Process The process of downloading and using Jing was extremely easy. I downloaded the application Jing from JingProject.com. After downloading Jing, I watched the introductory video provided on Jing’s homepage. This walked me through everything I really needed to know. I then reviewed the Screencast Rubric, chose my subject material, and was ready to begin. To use Jing, I followed the following steps:
I clicked on the delightful yellow ball at the top of my screen.
I selected the button that looks like this (+) and said capture. The capture button allowed me to select the portion of my screen that I wanted to use.
I then selected “Capture Video” which was the second option from the left that showed on the menu bar at the bottom left of my screen.
The application counted down from 3 to 1 and stated “Mic on”.
I then proceeded to narrate and show my PowerPoint.
When I had completed I chose the stop button (shape of square).
I was then given the option to save.
I saved the file and clicked share.
By clicking share my screencast was uploaded to the Screencast.com webpage and I was provided with a URL.
I then posted the URL to our PBWiki , and voila, task complete.
Please feel free to view my screencast by clicking --> .here .
Reflection I found this activity to be relatively easy and enjoyable. Using this application allows me to share my screen and or complete desk top with another person. I found this extremely useful in trying to obtain help from one of my more tech savvy friends when I was having a technical issue. While this application can be used for educational and professional needs, I also found some fun ways to use it in my personal life. This application not only allows you to share a screencast if you so choose, it also allows you to easily share a screenshot. I have a friend living overseas and I used this to share pictures and shop online with her. It was as if she was right here. The ease of this product makes it an exceptional application. The fact that it is free doesn’t hurt either. I would definitely recommend this application and this activity to others.
